Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon Matcha powder Sift before mixing
  • 2 tablespoons Water Cool or warm but not boiling
  • 3/4 –1 cup Cold milk Dairy oat, almond, or milk of choice
  • 1 cup Ice cubes Use as needed
  • 1 –2 teaspoons Simple syrup maple syrup, or honey Optional, to taste

Equipment

  • 1 Fine-mesh strainer For sifting the matcha
  • 1 Small bowl For mixing the matcha
  • 1 Matcha whisk or handheld milk frother Either works well
  • 1 Tall glass For serving
  • 1 Measuring spoon For accurate measurements

Method

  1. Sift the matcha. Place 1 teaspoon matcha powder in a fine-mesh strainer and sift it into a small bowl. Breaking apart compacted matcha helps create a smoother drink.
  2. Make the matcha concentrate. Add 2 tablespoons of water to the sifted matcha. Whisk briskly with a bamboo matcha whisk or handheld frother until smooth and free of visible clumps.
  3. Prepare the glass. Fill a tall serving glass about halfway to two-thirds full with ice.
  4. Add the milk. Pour 3/4 to 1 cup cold milk over the ice. Use 3/4 cup for a stronger matcha flavor or closer to 1 cup for a milder latte.
  5. Add the matcha. Pour the prepared matcha mixture over the cold milk.
  6. Stir and sweeten. Stir until the matcha and milk combine. Taste, then add 1 to 2 teaspoons of simple syrup, maple syrup, or honey if desired.
  7. Serve immediately. Give the iced matcha one final stir and enjoy it cold.

Notes

Use fresh matcha for the best flavor. Sift the matcha before whisking to reduce clumps. Don't pour vigorously boiling water directly onto the matcha; cool or gently warm water works well for this iced recipe. For a stronger iced matcha, use slightly more matcha rather than adding much less mixing water. For a creamier latte, choose whole milk or a creamy oat milk. For a lighter version, try almond milk. Liquid sweeteners mix into a cold latte more easily than granulated sugar. Serve the drink soon after adding ice to limit dilution.
